[Hai-users] Replacing ALC switch with UPB

Since the KLP-7 is nothing more than an input to the controller it makes no difference which lighting solution you choose. The updating of the Aegis board depends on the age. If it is 2000 then you will want to upgrade. If it is a 3000, you can just get an current Pro II chip and PCAccess. The KLP-7 is still supported in the current firmware.

My experience with 60-odd ALC switches has been the same - very disappointing given the price tag. I just had one fail where local control didn't even work - that was a first; I replaced it with a $2 Decora switch just so I could turn those lights on/off.
I'll probably move to UPB or ZWave; the only real stumbling block is what to do with my KPL-7 keypads - I have 10 of them and they're only wired with Cat5.
If I upgrade my old Aegis board to an OmniPro-II then I can still use them. If I stick with the Aegis or go with another automation/security system then I'll need to replace the keypads or find a way to make them talk to UPB/ZWave.

Hi Tom,
I’ve also had issues with the ALC. Pretty disappointing actually. With 60 or 70 switches in my own home I have a large percentage that no longer communicate and I’m looking into replacement. Most failed one by one but I later had some nearby lightning that took some out.
Is UPB the way to go? What are the pros/cons of the options (I have pretty much every kind of alc – relay, high/low power dimmer, with and without 3 way, etc).
Thoughts?
Dan

The 2 remote switches are probably fine, they only generate contact closure. All you should have to do is match the dip switch settings and replace the switch.

I have a On-Q ALC relay switch that has died and a quick look at different vendors tells me that this switch is discontinued and not readily available. Unfortunately this switch also has two other remote switches that communicate via low voltage cables. Is there any way to replace the switches without fishing 120 volt cables between the switches?
I have an Omni Pro II controller that also handles UPB switches and I would be open to using UPB switches. Or, what other options do I have?
