We have done extended x-10 under similar conditions and it all depends on
the quality of the wiring and where the Utility company transformer are
involved.

In a new house with the House and barn on the same Utility company
transformer but independent meters we had no issues.

On a older home, with questionable wiring (Neutrals reversed of ground not
present) , it would not work!.
