The collector side wouldn't need to be in the water cycle (and really
shouldn't be). It just needs to show heat absorption.
The water side would need some thought. If you need to run the pump for
that, yea, you'd need to cycle the pump. Using ambient (pipe) temp when the
pump is off may not be such a problem. You could experiment with that I
think.
