Remember, also that in 1997, former NU basketball guy Jim Burns resigned as US Attorney to run for Governor of Illinois.  Burns finished 4th in the Democratic primary, behind nominee Glenn Poshard, later-US Senator Roland Burris, and US Associate Attorney General John Schmidt.  Poshard, a Congressman from Southern Illinois, was defeated 51%-47% by later imprisoned Governor George Ryan.

Many times when I have seen NU's coach namesake mentioned , I think of the 
coincidence. 

For those of you old enough to remember, the US Attorney's job held by the other 
Fitz   was once held by NU grad Jim Thompson, who later became governor and was 
the keynote speaker at the 1979 NU graduation ceremony
