[NU Sports] Must-read

It is all about parental support -
Drew Crawford's parent obviously care about his college play (and I bet his grades to
boot).
But for some kids in other programs, the coach is the first adult male who actually cares
if they both play and go to class (to stay eligible). I do some sub teaching, the kids who
do not have both parents, or who have parents who don't really care, don't respect anyone.
I once had a middle school kid tell me that it didn't matter what she did in school, she
was going to quit and become a hairdresser and eventually own her own shop.
Great ambition, but the kids who actually do that, are the ones who learn to respect
others. This girl had an attitude you could cut with a knife.
If Amaker is graduating 100% of his kids then he is to be applauded. Check around the Big
10 leaders and see what are their grad rates, particularly among Roundballers.
I still call them d(uh)OSU

This is also mostly old news.
Amaker did get his hand slapped by the AD four years ago and told that the expectation was
that Amaker and his staff would conduct themselves in a manner "above reproach".
Since that time, the only sorts of issues that he has encountered are these anonymous
snipes from other coaches. They are not saying that Amaker is recruiting and Harvard is
accepting kids the violate the league rule. They are complaining that Harvard previously
had a higher minimum than the Ivy league, but now will admit kids that simply meet the
standards of the league.
The bottom line for me is whether Amaker's kids will graduate at the 100% rate of previous
teams.

So let's move onto discussion.
IMHO this whole discussion at Harvard or Duke or NU for that matter is a red herring. The
kids that are accepted at those schools for whatever reason are smart, well prepared, get
a lot of support, and graduate.
The REAL issue is that there is a 28% difference between white (88%) and African American
graduation rates (60%) at NCAA sanctioned schools, and the graduation rate for African
American male students who aren't athletes is 22% lower than that.
This isn't an indictment of universities or athletics in particular, but rather a question
of how we as a diverse society can expect to prosper when we are failing to prepare our
minority kids for the most reliable path to a good job - a college degree.

Speaking of Amaker:

"The definition of Harvard is its pristine academic reputation. But since Amaker's hiring,
that standard has a different meaning for its men's basketball team."
Discuss.
