[NU Sports] NU 19th on list of 25 schools who spend the most money on football

Private institutions (including Northwestern, thought not sure why you put
private in quotes) are typically not covered by freedom of information act
laws and therefore do not have to disclose coaching contracts (unlike
public institutions which are covered; Penn State was an exception, though
reporters used other methods to obtain contracts and information from there
and the state's laws will likely be changed as a result of the recent
scandal). But, schools must report coaches' salaries to the NCAA per their
own rules.

What is not included, though, are any school affiliated endorsement deals
or extra money for running camps and such which are included in the
contract but not the base salary. So, Fitz's actual pay is likely higher
than his salary (though doubtful he has a huge shoe/apparel endorsement
paycheck like Urban Meyer as a part of his new deal at OSU).

As discussed previously, NU clearly benefits from its membership in the Big
Ten and the equal revenue sharing of TV/bowl revenues & distribution of
some gate receipts for conference games. As others have mentioned, NU
needs this money to fund its other 18 competitive sports (as well as club
and intramural programs, I believe, since they fall under the athletic
department), and scholarships DO count as an expense (hence NU's increased
burden relative to other conference members).

Also note that Northwestern tries to run at a net profit of 0 (unlike many
schools that need to dip into general funds or public coffers to cover
losses); many schools do something similar (hence when you see that only a
handful of schools run a profit, it's a bit deceiving as many run at a net
profit of 0, though the many that are in the red are troubling).

I encourage you to look up Northwestern's athletic budget at this Dept of
Ed website: http://ope.ed.gov/athletics/GetOneInstitutionData.aspx

It breaks down revenues and expenses by sport and type of expense (one of
the biggest expense line items is scholarships, a total of $13,798,433).
There's a lot of good data there.

Jonathan
