I've always thought that story, if completely true, was more of
an excuse than a reason.

He lasted just six seasons at Michigan, where he had just about every
possible (legal) recruiting advantage, with only 3 NIT appearances to show 
for it, though he did very well at the NIT, winning it once, and 
runner-up another time.

Somehow I suspect Harvard isn't bending their recruiting rules
much for him, though he did win the Ivy League this year.
