[NU Sports] Trying to make s**t taste like ice cream

I seem to remember one year, Tex Winter got commits from 5 of the top players in Chicago.
Only 2 of them could get in.
Like it or not, it takes a special kind of roundballer to come play at NU. It takes a kid
who is willing to both shoot hoops for hours a day, AND spend another 3 or 4 hours doing
homework.
A kid who comes to NU to play basketball has to be a true student athlete, and anyone who
hangs around top high school athletes know that you are lucky to have one of that kind of
kid in each of the sports.
Illinois had some of the best talent in the state this year, and they couldn't win tonight
either.
NU has had a problem winning this year when the frosh point guard didn't get his shots to
fall, and tonight, nobody could buy a layup, or so it seemed.
Now comes the big argument over BC - I refer you all to Kevin O'Neil's comments about BC
and the NU job from the Trib, Carmody's a Survivor.

NU has now tried a new coach every 3 years, and one who sticks it out for 12. Can any of
you argue that the teams of the rotating staff years were any better than the last 4?
(please try not to be personal or stoop to ad hominum attacks)

How many big men are there right now in high school around Chicago who are better than
Alex Olah and can get admitted to NU? There may be several but I'm not aware of many of
them...

few years later when we got our first NIT bid. And like Aaron, I realize that we are
improved from when BC came in. But that is the problem. We compare BC to the rock bottom
years that we had. This is fine for the first few years when he was taking over a lousy
program but after 12 years, it hasn't really worked. We all know it's due to our inability
to recruit a handful of guys that can win. And Dennis ' assertion about big men is spot
on. We can't really compete consistently without one. I think its time for a change. Yes
I know if Solo's shot goes in many of us would be singing a different tune but that isn't
really the point.

contacts with a bunch of his peers and their assistants to find one good big man every
year or 2 who can get admitted to NU and who can be convinced that its a smart move to
play in Evanston. Its a gamble saying that essentially we should be able to find one
nearby,(rather than Ohio,Indiana or elsewhere) but I think we got to try something
different.
