Exactly correct.  And the NCAA still has groups looking to start more bowl games.

So let me be the first here to suggest the 'obvious' solution, go to a 13 game season.  
(I virtually guarantee it has been discussed in more rarified atmospheres, especially
in terms of how much more money that could wring out of the networks.)
