[NU Sports] Tough noogies

Interesting article, but ultimately frustrating.
The reporter quoted Delany twice in the article saying that the results
of allowing 6-6 teams to participate in the post season were "not all
positive", but never listed what Delany thought the negatives were.
That only leaves us to speculate on what the negatives are.
The only significant one that comes to mind is that schools lose money.
NU certainly travels well, but you can appreciate that other BT schools
used to participating in January bowls may not travel well to a lesser
bowl because the team had a down year. Changing the rule would
certainly spare a team the "embarrassment" of participating in a less
prestigious bowl, but then even under the current system, they could
always simply decline the invitation.
It is also possible that he is concerned that ad revenue may be getting
diluted and fewer bowl games would result in a higher net gain to the
BT, but I don't have access to any of those numbers to know for sure.
Delany may just be thinking ahead to some sort of playoff system and
would prefer to have fewer bowl games cluttering the landscape.
Otherwise, I'm with Fritz. Any bowl game is good for the program. Let
'em play.
Jeff

Here's a longer article with some quotes from officials around the
country
on possibly (re-)instating the "winning record" requirement for bowl
games:
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/17622358/if-bowl-eligibil
ity-jumps-to-seven-wins-which-bowls-get-86ed/rss
Note that until 2006 (when the schedule usually consisted of 11 games),
a
winning record (then 6-5) was required, and wins over I-AA teams only
counted in one of every four seasons (starting in 2006, you could count
one
per year).
Much like the 9 game Big Ten slate (scheduled to begin later this
decade) I
agree that upping the bowl requirement to 7-5 will be a good thing for
the
game as a whole but likely bad for Northwestern, specifically. But, I
would still support it (along with the "Plus One"/4 team playoff, which
I've supported for some time) as I think those in combination would
greatly
increase the value of the CFB postseason.
