[NU Sports] Tough noogies

Oops.

You know I just have a tough time keeping all of those "T" schools
straight anyway. After a while they all start looking the same.

Thanks for the correction.

"He felt that the NU-Texas Tech* game was competitive and entertaining
even though it was between two 6-6 teams."

*The Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas in the 2011 season featured NU vs.
Texas A&M, who were both 6-6 in the regular season. The TicketCity bowl
in the 2010 season had NU playing Texas Tech, both were 7-5 going into
the bowl game. This doesn't really affect your argument, though, but
thought I should point it out.

It's always dangerous to speak in absolutes. :)

The bowl games exist because they have sponsors, communities willing to
support them, and enough teams with at least six wins willing to play in
them.

Also, you can't just get a bunch of people together and start a bowl
game. The NCAA has to approve it. They are also in effect guaranteeing
that there are going to be enough teams to fill all of the slots.

I think what Fitz was referring to in his comment on 5 win teams getting
waivers was how the NCAA would react if there weren't enough eligible
teams to fill all of the slots.

Fitz's attitude, though, was that the bowling in general is a good thing
for players, the program, and the fans. So he supports the current
system with its regular season 6 win requirement. He felt that the
NU-Texas Tech game was competitive and entertaining even though it was
between two 6-6 teams.

Fitz used that phrase in the context of the suggestion (not that I've
heard there's been one) that a 5-win team be given a waiver to be in a
bowl game. The real question that has affected NU in the past has been
getting to a bowl game with six wins. Fitz seemed to be in favor of
that; he pointed out that we had an entertaining game this past season
with two 6-6 teams.

Personally, as much as I want NU to be in a bowl game every year, I
think that .500 teams going to bowl games is a joke. Everyone knows
there are way too many bowl games. I think the proposal that a team must
win at least 7 games to go bowling is a good thing.

Nice article, but the Fitz video was even better. It's been a long time
since I've heard the phrase "tough noogies".

In the final analysis, it will be Cobb and Hearn that push the Cats over
the top in the BT
Tourney and beyond. (IMHO)
