Speaking of Superman, who among us of sufficient years on planet Earth
didn't run around in our long underwear with a pair of undershorts on top
and a towel safety-pinned around our necks while we ran around making
whooshing noises as we pretended to fly. Waxing nostalgic, I recently
rented some of the DVDs from the first year (1951 perhaps?). In one, Jimmy
Olsen is visiting his aunt on a secluded island off New England when in
finally dawns on him that isn't really his aunt (DUH!) and that she is the
head of a gang up to no good. He finds a pay phone - this on a island c.
1950 - and calls Clark at the Daily Planet to express his concern. Clark
hangs up, rushes into a room that no one ever uses, rips off the hat he
wasn't wearing in the previous scene, and flies out the window, once more
unseen by a city of millions. Landing on the island a moment later, he
quickly changes back into Clark Kent and finds Jimmy, who asks excitedly,
"Golly, Mr. Kent, how did you get here so fast?" Clark stammers, "Uh . . .
I caught an early flight."

Yep, we believed anything in those days.
