[NU Sports] Something to argue over

One other comment on Dennis' selections. While Ara may have been a good coach for NU, I can't see him surpassing Barnett. I wonder how much credit he is giving him for his ND successes rather than his work at NU ? He did have a tough program coming in and he had a no win season early on perhaps re- inforcing a bad inheritance, but look at what Barnett did with the program he inherited ? While we have had some down years since 1995, NU has never looked back since his teams got us some respect. Compare that to the 20 odd years prior.

I do agree with Dennis' premise that the players from earlier years (not sure exactly how early )just can't compare with today's athlete. They were smaller and slower so their stats would have been worse against today's competition. The only sport category where you can definitively see that is track and field where todays athletes run faster and jump higher than they did in yesteryear.

How fast could a 220 pounder do the 40 yarder in 1960 ?

Not to mention in many schools the competition was limited to the white race only well into to 1960's and early 70's. When you limit the field of potential players against you, your numbers look better .

For my money, Pete Shaw was the best DB ever to line up for the Cats. Actually played several years for the Chargers. Nice guy, too.

I never saw him play, but Fred "the Hammer" Williamson has a good reputation. Three time AFL all-star. Hard to believe Brad Phillips stands up to either of those guys!

hhh something to debate. ....Good Stuff.
QB - Always liked Lenny Williams he would have been dangerous with a good
eam.....
B - How can you not have Darnell Autry. He was surely the face of the program.
amien was an excellent back.
R - Possibly Richard Buchanon
L - No OL from the Rose and Citrus Bowl teams...Can't argue with your choices
hough.
Good LineBackers and DL.
Chris Martin was a corner....(him and rodney ray did their thing)
nd I would take William Bennett at safety.....
OUR DAMN right about ISMAELI though....ONE of the best NU athletes of
LL-TIME....Somebody argue that fact with me.
Kickers....take your Pick Gowins or Valensizi......I would take Gowins...he
icked in NFL.

The center and free safety positions gave me the most trouble. Let's face it.
haven't had many outstanding players at either position. Wide receiver gave
trouble because we've had a number of worthy candidates over the years such
Flatley, Gissendaner, Buchanan, Simmons, Lane, and Brewer. I deliberately
oided calling on older players because they played in a different era and were
aller. Jack Rudnay was the exception because he was the one NU center I could
call who was considered outstanding. By the way, there is a heart breaking
ticle on Rudnay at http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=230223.
