[NU Sports] B(C)S ratings and attendance ...

I think the 25 yard rule is just about right because it is the inflection point for both the offense and the defense.
The defense has to prevent a first down in order to force the offense into a long field goal, but still has to defend the whole field.
The offense can't lose any yards and has to put at least a field goal on the board, so they have to balance their choices too.
If we got to the point where most FG kickers could make the 35 - 40 yard kick, then perhaps it would make sense to move it out a little. Otherwise, moving it out further simply prolongs the overtimes because the defense doesn't have to immediately deal with the prospect of giving up a field goal and the offense only has to focus on getting a first down in order to get into field goal range.

I do think using the 30 or 35 (or even the 40) would be better, as it would force teams to actually try to gain some yards even when they just need a FG. But even starting at the 25, the college approach is far, far better than the NFL approach in my opinion.
Of course, playing for a "safe" FG really hurt at least a couple of college teams this year, and the 25 yard-line rule has provided for some awfully exciting overtimes.
