Note that the NFL's new OT rule (that if the team that receives the kickoff
scores a FG on its opening drive, the opponent will get a possession to
either try for the FG to tie & go into further sudden death OT or a TD to
win) is only applicable in the playoffs and has never been used (it started
last season; two seasons ago, in the 2010 playoffs, the Saints got the ball
in OT vs the Vikings in the NFC Championship and kicked game-winning FG in
the opening possession, which eventually led to the rule change).

The talking heads (especially those dedicated to the NFL) love to bash the
college OT rules as "not real football" but I much prefer them to the NFL's
rules. If you wanted to actually be fair, you should probably extend the
game by 15 minutes (and then continue to do so if it remains tied) but I
realize due to the physical nature of the sport that isn't really
feasible. Given that, I think the equal possessions afforded in the
college game make it more fair (though I could see the argument behind
moving the ball back further than the 25 yard line).
