You can blame "liberals" for many things, discussion of which are not in the purview of
this list, but I wouldn't blame the present Bowl Glut on "them."

I think too many cities with empty big stadiums on Jan 1st see all the money generated by
places that are not even considered "mainstream," (such as the Cotton or Orange Bowl) and
figure they can get some of that Walt Disney/ESPN money too.

If memory serves, most of the original bowls were part of midwinter festivals or trade
association fund raisers. It was only after TV and then sponsors got into the act, that
bowls began to multiply like the proverbial rabbits.

One of my distant cousins was a bank CEO in New Jersey and a grad of Rutgers. He was
always trying to get a bowl in New Jersey because it would bring money into the state in
January or December, two traditionally slow vacation times in the Garden State.

Unfortunately, all you have to say is "Money" to local politicians looking to hire a few
more cronies, and suddenly you have a "bowl commission" and a group working to add another
bowl to the ESPN lineup.

Don't blame the "liberals." Those Pols are of all political stripes.

  But then the liberals ruined it . They have called for dumbing  down the standards so
that 70 teams now play.  It's like giving every kid who participates a medal rather than
