[NU Sports] When I am 64 ....

I'm with Mr. Weinbaum. 3-40-1 in my four years in Evanston. The
program now is on the right track. It's a bummer that this year's
defense couldn't match up with the firepower of this year's offense
(at least as the statistics showed our offense to be) and it's a
bummer that our offensive line was at times so godawful. But these are
all fixable problems. Big picture, every young man graduates, the team
GPA is above 3 and they're not taking rocks for jocks. Reminder: Penn
State and, to a lesser degree, Ohio State. We are always, as Jim
Phillips reminds us, one dumb decision by a 19-year-old -- or someone
-- from disaster. But we are doing it the right way at Northwestern.
And, mostly, we are winning.

Getting to as many Bowl games as NU has in recent years is a source of pride, as are the character and example of the staff and players.

The heart, efforts and community service activities of seniors like Persa have been very gratifying. And as I watched Saturday's game on TV, I thought NU used just the right touch in confronting, chuckling at and rallying around the team's Bowl baggage with the "63 Monkey."

That commemoration by the Cats and its message will stay with me much more than anything else about the game, Bowl losing streak notwithstanding.
