[NU Sports] When I am 64 ....

Perspective of this 51-year-old alum with "purple-colored glasses":

The Bowl futility streak is infinitely easier to swallow than NU's still-held major college record for consecutive losses ("accomplished" during my era), when achieving a .500 season seemed only slightly less far-fetched than reaching a Bowl game (and a future in the Big Ten seemed a shaky proposition). Getting to as many Bowl games as NU has in recent years is a source of pride, as are the character and example of the staff and players.

This program seems to be on the right track to be competitive just about every year and a contender for the league title some years...and, yes, a Bowl winner sometime soon.

I choose to focus on being grateful for the transformation from hopeless perennial doormat to a consistent source of inspiration, thrills and fun. The heart, efforts and community service activities of seniors like Persa have been very gratifying. And as I watched Saturday's game on TV, I thought NU used just the right touch in confronting, chuckling at and rallying around the team's Bowl baggage with the "63 Monkey."

Most of all, I found it very touching and appropriate that NU asked to wear helmet decals honoring the memory of the fallen Aggie player, who was killed in an accident after performing a community service. That commemoration by the Cats and its message will stay with me much more than anything else about the game, Bowl losing streak notwithstanding.

I imagine there are quite a few of us still hanging around. Maybe we can
adopt a new slogan. "Win one for the geezers."
