[NU Sports] Sun Times' Columnist puts his finger on the Ill-noise"problem"

One recruit that I've wondered about is Aaron Craft of tOSU. He'll likely be
first or second team All Big Ten and is reportedly a top-notch student (HS class
valedictorian, National Honor Society, etc).
Sometimes you miss the gems, but he would have been quite a catch for NU
(Sobolewski notwithstanding).

You guys have convinced me that BC should go. My standards had been lowered
because of how horrible we were during my college years in the mid to late 70's
and beyond. But with a larger NCAA field and mostly easy NC games we look better
with our record and NIT invites.
Our academic competitors Stanford,Duke Vandy, WF ?,ND, all have put together
very competitive teams over the years. Maybe not every year for them, but most
of them and certainly they can claim much better success since 1968 when we last
had a winning conference record
And remember our back yard of Chicago is a basketball mecca. So even if
academics nullifies some of them, we sure must have eligible talent that we are
being outrecruited against

You can Carmody because the 20-win seasons are based on a schedule of
pre-Big Ten season full of cupcakes. After 12 seasons, his Big Ten record
(no season over .500?) cannot be viewed as a success.
Like bowl appearances for a 6-6 team, four straight NIT appearances are made
possible by an ever-expanding NCAA field.
Chuck succinctly stated the problem and the solution: Carmody cannot
recruit. Fire him.
NU had reached a ceiling with Francis Peay. So, Peay's contract was not
renewed and NU hired an asst. coach from Colorado that, if nothing else, at
least gave NU hope that the future might get better.
Give Hardy a chance or clean house entirely and hire someone else. At least
give NU some hope.

Your conclusion is true, but the problem is that BC has a realistic shot at
making it 3 straight 20-win seasons and four straight NIT appearances. How
does it look if we can him with the program showing clear improvement from
its historical level of performance? The only thing worse than an
under-achieving program is an under-achieving program with unrealistic
expectations.
