Too soon to see if that'll happen, and Northwestern will have a lot of
competition for 'designated conference rival' in various sports.

But the Cats could easily become their 'designated thorn in the side'. :-)

In some ways, Nebraska may be as much of a one-horse town when it comes
to Husker football than Northwestern is for Cats football.

A former Nebraska men's basketball coach used to say that he had the
greatest job in the state, because nobody even remembered he was alive
until after the bowl game. While Nebraska has been to the NCAA
tournament a few times, they've never gotten very far. (I'm not
sure they've even won an NCAA tournament game yet.) They did win
the NIT once.

Nobody on the Husker List has mentioned the women's BB team loss to
Northwestern yet, there was a bit of grumbling after the men's team
lost to the Cats.

This year the men's team is struggling, and as I have previously noted,
Doc Sadler could get fired, except that he has a whopping big buyout
clause.

The women's volleyball team has a lot of support and several NCAA
championships, they always play to a sold out house. After the
new basketball arena in downtown Lincoln is completed, the Husker
Vballers may move from the Coliseum to a remodeled Devaney center, where
the basketball teams currently play.

Historically, I think the men's gymnastics team has the most championships
of any Nebraska sports team, but I don't know that they draw well these days.
(We used to go to meets regularly, but haven't been to one in probably 20
years.)

The baseball team has a new coach this year, former Husker and major league
player Darren Erstadt. Expectations are mixed, most people think they
should do better in the Big Ten (not a strong baseball conference) than
they did in the Big XII (a strong baseball conference.)
