*Heck, we are only a few weeks into the season and the crying towels are
out for the Cubs? *
I actually had been telling my friends before the season even started that
I thought this would be the worst Cubs team of my lifetime. So far,
unfortunately, they have been even worse than I imagined.
They did just trade their lone All-Star of last year, Marlon Byrd, who was
making (for MLB) a relatively reasonable $6.5 million per year, to the Red
Sox for a new janitor and a dozen gross of slightly-used baseballs -- and
even with that robbery they are on the hook for paying a significant chunk
of his salary this year. And they didn't even do it to promote their star
outfielder of the future, Brett Jackson, who hails from my little town of
Orinda, CA (where his proud papa can often be found spinning tales of
professional baseball at the local Starbucks). Latest news is the Cubs want
to give Jackson "plenty of time" to develop, so their
starting center-fielder for now will be determined by a lottery of ticket
holders each day just before the Star-Spangled Banner. First prize will be
50% off a Dominos pizza of lesser or equal value; 2nd prize will start in
center and bat sixth.
I'm still waiting to see the genius of Epstein. Perhaps his ideas don't
work as well west of Beantown.
