[NU Sports] 50 years ago today

That 1962 win by the Mets, when they were 0-9 and the Pirates were 10-0, is apparently one of only two wins in MLB history (the other was in 1918) by a team 0-9 or worse against a team 9-0 or better. And, also according to the Mets' announcers, it hasn't happened in any of the other major team sports.

Only fitting that an NU Wildcat got that type of underdog win!

The boxscore is @ http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT196204230.shtml.

By the way, the Humber perfect game yesterday for the Chisox brought back a memory of a controversial near-perfect game for the Cubs nearly 40 years ago. I had the chance to write about it in 2007:

Hope you enjoy it.

Best,
Willie

Heck, we are only a few weeks into the season and the crying towels are out for the Cubs?

What about the Red Sox?

They are certainly doing a great job making Epstien look like he was the key component in their winning formula.

Biggest disappointment for me so far is the LA Angels. They spent $154M to trail Texas by 7 games after three weeks of play.

Biggest surprise are my beloved Sox (the white ones). They've got great starting pitching. Bullpen has been lights out. Dunn has returned to his old form. He, Konerko, and Pierzynski are in the AL top 10 in average and RBI total. Rios is on a ten game hitting streak. Defense has been better than expected And their #5 starter just pitched a perfect game.

Looks like they have what it takes to give Detroit a run for their money. Should be a fun season at least on the South Side of town.
