In any marketing exercise, if you can get your competitors engaged on
your terms you have an advantage.
I'm sure Phillips would LOVE an Illinois challenge on who is the "real"
Chicago Big Ten Team. It only further legitimizes the claim that
somebody should be it and the corollary that it shouldn't be any team
based outside the state.
It is also a subtle knock that ND shouldn't even BE in the conversation.

It could turn out to be a marketing stroke of genius, but when you
start from nearly zero as far as marketing presence is concerned,
there's essentially nowhere to go but up, is there?
Winning, especially at home, is critical to building up a sustainable
fan base in the Chicago area.
The Cubs were loveable losers for decades with almost nobody in the
stadium, and if they keep playing like the team has rickets instead
of being owned by the Ricketts, they could lose that 'campness'.
I'm still a Cubs fan, but I doubt if I've watched 5 games all season
and I probably couldn't name 3 players in the starting lineup,
in part because I can never be sure which games will be on WGN
and they don't do the games on internet radio.
