[NU Sports] Farewell Big East

As a former coach of the Ville likes to say: "Not so fast my friend". The
Big 12 has put the Mountaineers on hold and is now giving Louisville serious
consideration once again while apparently also entertaining the thought of
ND. Since I have thought the Cardinals made more sense for the Big 12
anyway, I'm not terribly surprised. I just wonder who it was that convinced
DeLoss Dodd of Texas that Morgantown is just not a great place for a road
game. He was supposedly the biggest West Virginia backer based, from my
sources, solely and I do mean solely, on its on-field football performance
over the last 5-10 years, which is admittedly better than Louisville's.
Again from the rumor mill, the Big 12 is considering letting ND bring all of
its sports except football into the conference in return for playing six
Big12 schools a year. Now, the leap from there to full membership is little
more than accommodating NBC and the Big 12's newly minted equality of
distribution rules. If ND goes, then I would expect it to take full
membership around the time of the 2015 renewal of the NBC contract, which
would be worked out together with the league. A further impetus to ND
moving now is the increased willingness of the Big East Catholic seven non
football schools to consider separating themselves. They are closer now to
doing so then they have ever been and I would be surprised if it doesn't
happen soon. They would likely pick up Xavier and possibly Dayton and
Butler and go forward without the football schools who would be left with
some mega conglomeration of the remnants of the Big East, Conference USA and
Mountain West.
This is almost as much fun to watch as the games have been this season.
