Dennis,
I agree that Northwestern didn't lose the game so much as Robinson won it.
He is a remarkable players and simply took over the second half.
As far as long balls are concerned, if you recall, we had a long completion over a DB too. We made interceptions because our defense was in the right spot to make them and had coverages in the first half that seemed to confuse Robinson.
We did have an opportunity to turn this into a shootout but the two dropped touchdown passes at the end of the first half and the two turnovers in the second half did us in. Assuming we score a touchdown rather than a field goal at the end of the first half and touchdowns on the two drives in the second half that were cut short by turnovers, that's 18 points which was basically the margin of victory.
As far as how the two teams compared, here's a little thought experiment for you. Just switch QB's and leave all of the other players in place. Which team wins?
I say NU, because that's how dominant Robinson was in the second half. No disrespect intended to Persa either. He is a much better passer than Robinson. But Robinson's speed and escapability are really special.
The good news is that Iowa, PSU, and Indiana look eminently beatable. Win those three and we still have a shot at a 7 win season. Nebraska is also looking suprisingly vulnerable. So there is a lot of football left.
I also suspect that the frustrations of the last three games will only motivate Fitz and crew to work harder to become a better team the rest of the way.
Jeff

Robinson threw three interceptions in the first half, all of which were
badly thrown balls, not the result of the Wildcat defense. The Wildcat
defense concentrated on stopping Robinson's running, which they did in the
first half. In the second half, Robinson was a different quarterback, and
Michigan's superior skill, strength, and depth took over while Robinson's
passing became lights out. Our pass defense wasn't as bad as last week, but
it wasn't good either. Michigan caught some long balls that good defensive
backs should have knocked down. And Persa is still not Persa as far as his
running goes.
