[NU Sports] Coaching carousel

I certainly hope that Persa gets a chance to follow his dream.

That said, I hope that dream isn't running the spread for an NFL team. Defenses are just too big and too fast for running QB's to have a long career. Combine that with the incredible defensive schemes out there now which essentially focus on damaging the QB, and I wonder why anyone would want that job.

The rise of Tim Tebow and the system they've built around him suggests that QB's like Dan
just might have a future in the NFL.

I think it was Skip Bayless' show today where they were talking about how you have to have
a backup for someone like Tebow (or Vick, or Young) who can do the same things or the
system eventually fails because you can't count on a QB to play a full season when you let
him run around.

The NFL just doesn't seem to totally understand how to make a QB the 2nd running back in
the spread and use that concept to confuse defenses. They made the point that all of the
great running QB's wound up not using their arms as much, and it is when they forget that
2nd running back option that those teams fall apart.

Of course you can over use the QB as a running back, and wind up with a situation like the
Eagles, where Vick ran himself into the training table, and Young came in, used the right
balance and seemed to reignite the Eagles, even if they can't win. It's a shame they won't
try Kafka - I think that even with being a little slower, he has the arm to provide the
balance.

We watch a modified spread every week in Baltimore, as Cam Cameron's offense combines
parts of the spread with a 2 back power offense. Flacco is not afraid to take off running
if the lane opens up, and many of the defenses keep a linebacker around to keep him from
running. When it works, it works, but the Ravens also will go with no backs and at times
look like NU with everyone split out.

Now, I can see Denver drafting Persa as a backup for Tebow. I can also see some other team
drafting him with the idea of adding that dimension to their offense.

Of course, they can't get rid of the stud WR's needed to make it work the way they did in
Denver, and as Persa has shown, having a good TE/FB/Superback doesn't hurt either.

In any case, I think we'll be pleasantly surprised at this year's crop of Seniors after
draft day.

If Dan Persa can't make it in the NFL (I doubt he'll even be drafted),
I'd love to see him on the Northwestern staff in the future.
Same passion!
