I do understand it, because I saw similar degrees of reverence at Nebraska 
for both Devaney (still fondly called the Bobfather) and Osborne.  

That exacerbates the degree of loss as to the means and suddenness
of Paterno's fall, the extent to which his reputation was shattered
forever.  Will it ever be possible for anyone to mention JoePa without
everyone thinking about what Sandusky is charged with having done?  

One commentator called it the worst scandal in the history of sports.
It's hard to find an adequate parallel.  Woody Hayes?  Shoeless Joe 
Jackson?  Both of them did themselves in by acts of commission, not 
acts of omission.
