[NU Sports] Polls and Bowls

The 2 ESPN guys (Schlabach and Edwards) also have us going to Detroit--the drumbeat is getting louder:

Hopefully, Rick Phillips can pull off one of his miracle finishes and get us to a different bowl, but his credibility took a hit with the "Persa Strong" campaign, followed by Dan P. being out for the first 3 games. I still believe in him, but I think that it will be an uphill battle. Interestingly, they have the Zook-less Illini going to the R & L Bowl in N'awlins, and no Big Ten team in San Fran.

I think that we have an AD and Prez who want us somewhere that alumni want
o go to. With all deference to the quality upgrades they have made in the
ord Field area, I just don't see the average NU alumnus flying out from a
oast on Xmas day for the Pizza Pizza Bowl.
Detroit is a great destination for Purdue alumni, it is a short drive for
ost of them. Purdue will go to Detroit.
I think our school mucky-mucks are working the phones right now. We already
now that the bowl in San Francisco has publicly said they'd like to have a
ig Ten team. As it turns out, we may have more alumni in the Bay Area than
ny Big Ten school but Michigan. The Kraft FH on NYE in SF would love to
ave us. A few things need to fall the right way, but I think that is where
e end up.
NU will go to a cool destination for its bowl game, because we have shown
ur alumni will come and shell out for the experience. New Orleans, New
exico and San Francisco all make sense and will have openings. We will go
o one of those spots.

I've ignored some of the digs on Detroit that have popped up over the past
couple of weeks on this list. Just wanted to take a moment to stand up for
 the D.

Ford Field is one of the best indoor venue's in the country.

Good hotels to stay within walking distance of Ford Field. Lots of young
folks living down here now (95% residential occupancy rate) which means
lots of cool new shops, bars, and places to eat. Michael Symon's Roast and
24Grille at the Westin Book-Cadillac are nationally recognized
resturaunts. Also hot and cold running casinos for the gambling crowd.

We'd likely play Northern Illinois who score A LOT.

 Jeff

With some of the teams above them guaranteed to lose next week (conf
championship games), Michigan is in good shape to sneak into top 14, which
any sensical BCS bowl will likely snap up.

This would mean just 1 Big Ten team doesn't get a conf-affiliated spot, and
my money's on Illinois. That means it depends on how far PSU falls and if
Houston wants them; NU would have a decent shot there if they pass on PSU,
otherwise it looks like a trip to Detroit is in the cards (since I doubt
Dallas wants NU for 2nd straight year). But, nobody knows for sure until
 exactly 1 week from now.
