[NU Sports] Teddy G's Bowl Projections

As much as I would like to see the Cats in Washington, I am not
optimistic. If they beat the Spartans, they will get invited to something a tier or
two above the Military Bowl. At 6-6, however, my gut instinct is that they
will opt for a bowl that can offer a better financial offer than the D.C.
bowl. Ultimately, the bottom line is that a school's post-season decision
is indeed governed by the bottom line. I'd like to be wrong and believe
appearing in the Nation's Capital has a high profile and a connection with a
large alumni base in the East. I've, in fact, made the case to AD Jim
Phillips in an email and others may wish to weigh in, too.

List Gang,
Count me as one of those who'd love to see a 6-6 NU team in DC. I went to
the Military Bowl two years ago when UCLA beat Temple. UCLA had many more
fans there than I thought, and Temple brought 10,000 down from Philly. UCLA
won when Bernard Pierce left the game (knee?) and Temple had trouble
passing.
I believe NU played in Annapolis in 2002. Navy at NU was canceled
because of 9/11. I was there as well as my 8 year old daughter, who bawled when
2 f-14's did a fly-over before kick-off. Coach Roy was there to witness the
whole thing! One of Baz's first starts, we won 49-40 over a bad Navy
team; may have been Paul Johnson's first year. After that game I knew 2002 was
going to suck, just like the 2nd half of the 2001 season. They did. I call
the 2nd half of 2001 and 2002 "mini Dark Age", but 2002 toughened our
young players for 2003,2004 and 2005.
I don't expect to see NU in DC as we'll beat Team Green, but in the rare
event that this may happen, go to DC Cats!
Happy Thanksgiving List Gang! Go CATS!! Eric

You're right. I remember now too since I was in fact there in Annapolis.
Must have been close to ten years ago.

Unmentioned is the Dec 28 Military Bowl at RFK Stadium in Washington.
Story in the WASH POST today indicated they are desperately now looking
at
bowl-eligible teams from a number of conferences because both Army and
Navy
this year are not eligible. Of course, if NU beats MSU, then our
options
open up significantly, but at 6-6 the Cats would have an attractive,
high-profile opportunity playing in the Nation's Capital, which has a
large NU
alumni base. Obviously, that is my preference as a D.C. area resident,
but I
believe there would many upsides to coming here, including the prospect
of
pulling in alums from throughout the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions.
I
don't recall the Cats ever playing any closer to Washington DC than Duke
in
Durham, NC, although someone with more institutional memory can correct
me.
