[NU Sports] FW: NU alum Brennan: Penn State needs to skip bowl season

I get a chuckle about how all these sanctimonious writers are calling for no bowl or no season or even no football in PSU's future. I think the medical school analogy hits it on the head -- it's a ridiculous idea. 

Teams that have cheated, beaten up girlfriends, landed in the police blotter and more have been welcomed by bowls in the past. Heck, with the Fiesta Bowl scandal still unraveling in Arizona, the bowls themselves are a ponzi scheme waiting to be blown down and exposed.

These kids had absolutely nothing to do with this mess - let them play. The only bowl refusal I can remember is the Irish that year when they didn't like the bowl they got put into. This is a chance for the players to get another game, another look by pro scouts, another chance to play the game they love. How dare these writers make the student athletes pay for this.

Besides, football revenue -- especially at a school like PSU -- funds most of the entire athletic program, so they're really calling to punish the entire student athlete population at PSU. And since bowl revenue is split, it's really a decision that affects ALL Big Ten schools as well.

If the conference is feeling guilty, they can donate their cut of the bowl revenue to charity. Or maybe that board of trustees should donate their salaries for the last decade to charity for their poor management of something going on under their noses.

Call for the pensions of Spanier and the other officials. But these self-righteous columns calling for cancellation of football games or seasons is just a lot of hot air looking for attention. I'm surprised Rick Reilly hasn't written one yet - that's the level of desperation of public hand-wringing and attention these columns smack of, frankly.
