On Bergan Evans - somewhere in either the WGN Archives or NU Archives, there should be his
TV or Radio shows that he did oh so long ago.

On the Penn State Grand Jury indictments...

Paul can probably cite the source, but I've always read that a grand jury can indict a ham
sandwich if they want to, all that is required is a modicum of belief that the crime was
committed by that person. Crimes and rumors of crimes are all fair game. For me, I'd never
want to appear in front of one as a "person of interest."

One of the stories on Penn State this week noted that while there is a lot of testimony
about Sandusky in the showers with young boys, none of the alleged victims have told
investigators that they were molested. McQueary's eyewitness testimony is the only direct
accusation in the entire report.

But the Grand Jury report states specific acts of sodomy that could only have come from
the victims.

In any case, I'm not so sure that McQueary didn't report what he saw to the police, in
this case the campus security force which functions as a private police force on every
college campus.

I'm not a lawyer, but it appears to this observer that it always came down to Sandusky's
word against a kid who really didn't want to talk about whatever happened. At one level,
it reminds me of that Daycare case out in California, and if it wasn't for the Janitor,
and McQueary, this case would still be sitting in a file in some obscure office of the
campus police.

Thanks for that link, Stephen.

Maybe now that the hysteria is dying down, we'll see some more good
old fashioned 'reporting'.

Many people seem to assume that not only is the grand jury report the Gospel
truth, but it is the complete story.

Worth noting in this ESPN article is the comment that grand jury reports
often leave out some details. And it isn't out of the question for the
report to have some inaccuracies in it, either. (As I recall, it is
ultimately up to a jury to decide what the facts are.)

Those of us who attended Northwestern when Bergen Evans was teaching there
may reflect back on what Bergen always had to say about the Bible. His
annual lecture on 'Satire, or Jonah and the Whale' always packed Tech
Auditorium. (I wonder if NU ever recorded his lectures?)

BTW, though Governor Corbett is apparently an ex-officio member of the
Penn State Board of Trustees, last Friday's meeting was said to be the
first he had attended. I suspect it has been a while since ANY Governor of
Pennsylvania had attended one. One wonders if he will attend the next one.
I wouldn't bet on it.
