I figured I'd link to this one -- nice to see some thoughtful and more level-headed analysis coming through now amid the hoopla and calls for rash action. Still a lot of questions, but a good reminder that everything has yet to come out ...

I remain struck at how he could stick around the program, but then again after reading that article last week about the PA governor/de-facto PSU board head, he's known for two years now and had to still smile, shake Graham Spanier's hand and not say anything while leading the board of trustees (you'd think he could have at least suggested that they have some kind of crisis management plan for a nameless emergency without violating any oaths, because the university has handled this about as poorly as it could be handled in every respect). There are a lot of legal ties here we probably don't know about who can say what, who can fire whom and so on.

For the record, I think Bradley is absolutely right about playing in a bowl game ... (1) the players did nothing wrong, (2) it sends the message that life goes on without Paterno, (3) it keeps the incident in the spotlight so those responsible for the crimes and the cover-up don't get to slink away into the darkness -- especially in this era of a media and public with short attention spans.

I agree that the big-name bowls won't want to invite PSU and they will slip far (because bowls are never accused of wrongdoing, scandals or invite teams with athletes who have been in trouble with the law) ... but in case no one's noticed lately, the B(C)S has decimated the attendance at these small bowls. Most games will be in front of half-empty stadiums and ratings will be ho-hum. Penn State will fill seats and, like it or not, the scandal will bring in more attention and viewers. The bowls only see green -- some of the big ones can pretend to have principles for a year, but the smaller ones will have a tough time passing up a team with 8 or 9 wins who will fill seats and bring in viewers.

Go Cats!
