I think Jim is correct that they all knew, maybe not how bad but bad. In
the 70's my ex-father-in-law was on the national board of the boy scouts when
they had a scandal which some members of NAMBA were found to be scout
leaders. I read the report and it is mind boggling how these guys justied their
sexual relationship with these children as not only acceptable but
actually beneficial to them. I am afraid some of that thinking was going on at PSU.
Paul,
This is my own theory (certainly not proven yet) but I think the entire
Penn State coaching staff will be legitimately tainted when as is said and
done. I find it very hard to believe that Sandusky developed this behavior at
age 55. I think, sadly, we will learn that he was abusing boys for a
majority of his time on the Penn State payroll. Someone whose wife works with
abuse victims told me last week that the average pedophile commits 107 crimes
before being caught (not 107 victims, but 107 events).
I would love to be wrong here but I think we're going to learn that the
entire coaching staff knew "Jerry had a thing for young boys" in the same way
we know about the office alcoholic or gambler. What I am truly curious
about is whether or not the understood rule was "if you see something, tell
Coach Paterno". That might explain McQueary's pathetic behavior but it will
be far more damaging to the university.
Jim
