[NU Sports] Random Thoughts

1. I'm not a big Soccer fan, but Wildcat fans should be proud of the "other" football
team's accomplishment this year. They won the season, and they won the tournament Sunday.
Way to go Men's Soccer.

2. I guess dunking isn't going to be our forte on the court this year. Both Shurna and
Crawford missed dunks last night. Crawford was quoted as saying something about just
missing it, but he's been nursing a tender ankle.

In a typical Carmody post game comment, he looked at Shurna and asked if his ankle was
hurting also.

3. That Illinois LB was trying to help a couple of his teammates when he was shot
Saturday. Football players do that sort of thing - my son David was a bit of an "enforcer"
when he played, but then there were the two younger players who got into a different fight
and have now been suspended from playing with the team.

Sounds like Zooker is losing control down in Champaign. Don't they tell the ballplayers to
leave it on the field?

4. I really liked Jeff Beamsley's analysis of how the team matured this year. My only
addition is to point out that when you wind up recruiting mostly 3 star players, you
normally don't get a return until they are redshirt juniors or seniors.

We've been lucky in that several of the younger recruits have stepped up and won 2 deep
jobs, but is that because they are that much better, or have the guys who red shirted not
developed as the coaches 2-3 years ago hoped.

Remember Barnett's "Fab 5" linemen? The guys who allowed GB to essentially cut some of the
RS Seniors up front? They were the best 5 linemen NU had recruited in years, and now
nobody talks about how good or bad that line was, the only thing I ever heard was
disappointment that they never clicked as a unit.

When Murphy reached down and grabbed Fitz as head coach, he really went for the recruiter
in the group. All you had to do was watch Fitz shaking hands with half the Rice team
Saturday and you realize that he knew all those kids from his days recruiting Houston.

And that is really going to be the future of NU Football, and the Fitzgerald era.
