To be fair, Vanderlinden was a very outspoken coach during his time at Maryland. 

 

I used to hear him on the radio taking fan calls and he could be pretty dismissive of fans
who questioned his coaching, but it was refreshing to hear a coach not put up with all the
typical Fan BS that drives coaches nuts.

 

The new AD and he did not get along, many didn't understand since Vandy at Maryland was on
the verge of doing what Barnett had done at NU, he was fired after his 3rd year, and the
team was on the verge of starting to win.

 

The only reason I can reasonable put forward for his removal came out after Fridge took
over, he started getting non-attendance reports on his players and since he was on a
weight loss program, ordered anyone who turned up on the "cut list" to meet him at Byrd at
6 AM to run the bleachers or they would lose their scholarships. 

 

The first day, most of the team had to show up.

 

Fridge went on to have a pretty good season with Vandy's recruits, but never recruited to
the level of player Vandy achieved. 

 

Vandy popped up in State College, I'd guess because he was the complete coaching package
and he's been in the pressbox for PSU ever since.

 

He is relatively untainted by the Penn State scandal and you wonder if he's ready to ride
off into the sunset wondering what might have been.

Roy, 

 

   Vandy and Deb just didn't get along; I remember Vandy was a marked man the day she took
her job.  As far as skeletons in Ron's closest, this is a very legitimate criticism.
Barry Sweitzer may be right that lots of people knew, but I think Barry is getting his
last laugh and is kicking JoePa squarely is the nuts for off-the-cuff comments made by
Paterno in the Nineties.  And to think, Switzer and Sherrill's shenanigans look like
nothing compared to what's going on in State College.

 

BTW: happy Veteran's Day, fellow swabbie! (and Don W. too. Semper Fi my purple friend!)

Not sure Fitz would want one of his former coaches on his staff as an assistant 
AND I'd
sure like to know why he was fired at Maryland when that team was doing so well 
coming
back from disaster.
 
One word was that he "didn't get along" with the new female AD, but the other 
was that
players never went to classes.
