[NU Sports] Paterno should go now

I agree with Jeff. Why should the players be penalized particularly if Joe is out by playoff time ? The team wasn't helped and none of the players committed
 any sin.

Perhaps the players should vote if they should be eligible or not

I think it is important to avoid confusing football with the reputation of the institution.

While this involved a retired football coach and a "retiring" football coach, as others have stated, there is no evidence that any of the players were involved. Though some of the coaches may have been tainted by their failure to live up to their moral responsibilities to the community, there is no evidence that their actions gave the team an unfair advantage on the field (the consequence of illegal recruiting or covering up player violations).

Spanier was concerned about the institution of Penn State. While some of the blowback would affect coaches and potentially recruiting and ticket sales, I think that was way down on the list of things that he was concerned about.

The institution is already suffering the public pain for this incident and I'm sure it will be reflected in reduced donations, lower applications for admissions, and any of a thousand other ways that institutions trade on their reputations to generate money.

Also punishing the football players for this action doesn't make sense to me.

Jeff

I agree 100%. The University needs to show that football is no longer it's #1 priority.

Does PSU really want the scandal following them for weeks -- which it will if Joe stays until the end of the season?

They should send Joe (and McQueary) home now, let the staff finish the season, decline a bowl bid and clean house -- which means everybody goes. Bradley, Jay Pa, Vanderlinden, everybody, and start over. They cannot build the next era on one scandal-tarred brick of the Paterno mess.

My God, did we ever think we'd write something like that? But we have to. Joe must go now. Now.
