Hard to read the tea leaves here.

The Board is clearly in control here which suggests that things may not be going all that well for Spanier either.

Boards generally don't like to reach into organizations and fire people in the way that you described.  Retirements (forced or voluntary) are much more their style.

I guess we'll see.

One of the interesting things about the statement is the bit about suggesting that he's sparing the trustees from having to spend any further time worrying about his status. 

That strikes me as a fairly sad attempt at trying to avoid being fired sooner, like today. It's insane to think the trustees aren't going to discuss whether he should be allowed to coach another day. 

If I were a betting man, I'd guess that Galen Hall or Ron Vanderlinden will be coaching against Nebraska this week, with a complete clean-out prior to a bowl game.
