I agree with Paul and have expressed similar sentiments in the past. Its easy to say you can do both ala Stanford this year, but those instances are few and far between

My late father graduated first in his class in Chemistry from Ohio State and always claimed he got a great education there in the 30's but would always complain that the first thing anybody ever mentioned to him when hearing where he went to school was football. He hated that even though he rooted for them (except in the 1995 game against Michigan !). He always praised NU's approach even as we got clocked in the 70's

Absolutely, Roy.

By the way, I want to respond (briefly) to something Dennis said the other day. He was discussing how he wanted to see NU go for the National Championship and beat Ohio State, etc. Well, I was thinking about it, in light of the Penn State quagmire (and that's putting it euphemistically). I have a different take. If going for the BCS Championship, or beating OSU (as much as I would love that), means we have to be institutionally corrupt in our Athletic Dept like the Buckeyes and (former) Coach Sweater Vest, or morally "blind" like what we are seeing come out of (not so) Happy Valley, then I'll stick with simply being very satisfied with a "November to Remember", a 7-5 record, a minor bowl (with a win, I hope), a sterling graduation rate, avoidance of past scandals (such as the 1994 "Betting" mess), and the transitory joy each year or so of beating a Nebraska or a Michigan as an upset, or going down to the wire with an Auburn in Tampa. Our school has a wonderful reputatio
n, and my late father always taught me, once you lose your reputation for integrity, you can never get it back. It's not worth even putting a risk for a few more wins on the gridiron. And I am confident that everyone on this List would agree. I think in Fitz, in Jim Phillips, and in Morty Schapiro we have a team that would NEVER have permitted what we are seeing now in State College. For that I am very thankful--much more thankful than I was at about 7 p.m. E.D.T. Saturday evening when the clock ran out on the Huskers. When we chant "Go U NU", it means something good, very, very good. Now, when those at Beaver Stadium chant "We Are Penn State", they probably don't know whether to laugh, cry, or transfer (if they are students).
