[NU Sports] Jeff is right about a moral obligation to report abuse

Paul and List Friends,
Well put. As a Pennsylvanian, I am greatly troubled by this situation and believe pedophilia is about criminal intent rather than sexual expression. About 8,9 years ago I was invited to a golf outing which sponsored Sandusky's 2nd Mile Foundation. Business caused me to cancel and I was always upset to have missed that event, until now. To think the Foundation that was created to help kids was a vehicle to further destroy them is disconcerting.
Some would tell me I'm crass, but the calls to Urban Meyer, Les Miles and Nick Saban have already been made. Meyer, Miles or Saban, will be needed to clean up this mess. This is going to get nasty.
Eric

Roy,
With all due respect, as a "Boomer" (and contemporary of yours at NU), neither
you, nor I, nor the Hippies or Flower Children, created or condoned the
conditions for pedophilia. You can justifiably blame our generation for some
bad things or praise us for some good things (such as helping to end segregation
and America's involvement in the Vietnam War--although I am sure you wouldn't
agree--and advancement of equal rights for women), but what Sandusky is accused
of doing, no, that cannot be credibly laid at our collective feet, and no
chickens are coming home to roost here. Under your theory, are you also going
to blame "Boomer" culture for the Catholic Priest Pedophile scandals? Evil
exploitation is what Sandusky's alleged actions were, if true, pure and simple,
same as with the Priests.
As for Sandusky's alleged enablers and perjurers, Messrs. Curley and
Schultz--what did we all learn from (resigned) President Nixon--the Cover-up is
always worse than the crime? That didn't come from the "Boomers"--in fact,
those of us who always knew he couldn't be trusted were proven right when he was
caught lying on the released tapes---and then had to confess to his stalwart
allies--men of integrity such as Barry Goldwater--that he had duped them and
misled them all along.
I fervently hope that Joe Pa has some valid explanation for his very limited,
superficially correct, but insufficient, response when he was made aware of the
"cancer" (to use John Dean's famous Watergate phrase) within his ranks. While
Sandusky was no longer a Coach at that time, I don't think that gives Joe Pa a
moral "out", even if it gives him a legal one. This is so troubling I have a
hard time processing it. Would love to hear Fitz's take on all of this, given
his virtual worship of Coach Paterno.
Forgive me for being so prolix, but I had a lot to say.

Does answer a lot of questions about State Penn back in the 90's
The problem is that while they do not link pedophilia with homosexuality, those
who are
confronted with pedophilia don't always understand the difference, and they
don't want to
call down the "hammers of hell" response you get if you call attention to the
activities.
JoPa had to suspect that Sandusky had certain leanings towards pedophilia or at
least that
he was going both ways in his personal life. Sooner or later, a subordinate
gives away his
feelings, and out on recruiting trips, there had to be some inkling of
Sandusky's problem.
But you don't bring someone's personal life into a business arrangement unless
it starts
to affect their performance. When all this started, Sandusky was a very well
respected
defensive guru.
I'm not happy that all this has happened to a man who was considered one of the
best
coaches back in the mid 90's. The assistant who witnessed the reported event was
obviously
scared to report what he saw to anyone, because Sandusky had a tremendous
reputation, and
so much power over the assistant coaches.
But what is worse is that this is going to rip up college football as every
investigative
reporter in every Div I or II town starts to look under rocks, and, of course,
there will
have to be new rules imposed to try to get people to enforce what is really good
common
sense enforcement of existing laws relating to minors.
We boomers created and allowed an "anything goes" attitude in the 60's and 70's.
And now
the Chickens are coming home to roost and it effects not our children, but our
grandchildren.

... And the Pa. State Police Commissioner is now saying the same thing.
Spanier and Curley and Schultz may escape on narrow legalistic terms but their
moral
culpability is blindingly obvious.
Look at the time line here and ask yourself: why was Sandusky allowed to work
with
children until 2008? Why did Sandusky not get the Maryland job in 1996? Why did
Joe tell
Sandusky in 1999 he would be his (joe's) successor when in fact that seemed very
possible?
Why did somebody at PSU who knew of the 1998, 2000 and 2002 incidents not call
the real
cops? Why was Sandusky not thrown off campus and his office and keys taken away?
Why didn't Penn State do the right thing??? And how many children's lives were
devastated
as a result?
