[NU Sports] Jeff is right about a moral obligation to report abuse

Does answer a lot of questions about State Penn back in the 90's

The problem is that while they do not link pedophilia with homosexuality, those who are
confronted with pedophilia don't always understand the difference, and they don't want to
call down the "hammers of hell" response you get if you call attention to the activities.

JoPa had to suspect that Sandusky had certain leanings towards pedophilia or at least that
he was going both ways in his personal life. Sooner or later, a subordinate gives away his
feelings, and out on recruiting trips, there had to be some inkling of Sandusky's problem.

But you don't bring someone's personal life into a business arrangement unless it starts
to affect their performance. When all this started, Sandusky was a very well respected
defensive guru.

I'm not happy that all this has happened to a man who was considered one of the best
coaches back in the mid 90's. The assistant who witnessed the reported event was obviously
scared to report what he saw to anyone, because Sandusky had a tremendous reputation, and
so much power over the assistant coaches.

But what is worse is that this is going to rip up college football as every investigative
reporter in every Div I or II town starts to look under rocks, and, of course, there will
have to be new rules imposed to try to get people to enforce what is really good common
sense enforcement of existing laws relating to minors.

We boomers created and allowed an "anything goes" attitude in the 60's and 70's. And now
the Chickens are coming home to roost and it effects not our children, but our
grandchildren.

... And the Pa. State Police Commissioner is now saying the same thing.

Spanier and Curley and Schultz may escape on narrow legalistic terms but their moral
culpability is blindingly obvious.

Look at the time line here and ask yourself: why was Sandusky allowed to work with
children until 2008? Why did Sandusky not get the Maryland job in 1996? Why did Joe tell
Sandusky in 1999 he would be his (joe's) successor when in fact that seemed very possible?
Why did somebody at PSU who knew of the 1998, 2000 and 2002 incidents not call the real
cops? Why was Sandusky not thrown off campus and his office and keys taken away?

Why didn't Penn State do the right thing??? And how many children's lives were devastated
as a result?
