I just seem to remember "the beach" being one reason kids chose Stanford (back in my
recruiting reporting days.) Maybe its the concept of California - sun, sand and the Beach
Boys (or Drugs and Rock & Roll) that casts its allure, but the smart kids all think they
need to go to Stanford to be successful later in life, particularly in the electronics
industry.
We have a similar situation here in Seaford with Sussex Tech. The tech school seems to be
able to bleed off the better Middle School athletes by selling them on a "better"
education.
The quote their higher cost per pupil numbers, not mentioning that when you have an entire
area dedicated to teaching auto-cad, or building trades, you tend to spend twice as much
money because of materials.
When Seaford HS plays Tech in baseball, there are usually 16 of the 18 starters who come
from Seaford. They go there because the parents think that money equals better education,
but their college rate is slightly higher, and most of their grads go to the local
community college anyway.
And the saddest part is kids who would start at home, ride the bench at Tech and maybe
quit before they are Seniors. Its a big waste, since many kids don't develop the skills
until they are Juniors or later.

Roy,
Stanford's campus is gorgeous, but it is not on a beach, more hills and woods. NU has the
beach, sans California weather.

But they have that California beach location, and that Tree.

> Why else is Stanford the talk of the town ? Because its a rare case that a school does
exceptionally well at both football and academics. Of course it happens but its more the
exception than the rule.
And Stanford has not been a consistent powerhouse school.
In the 17 seasons since 1995, Stanford has had seven winning seasons.
In that same time period, Northwestern has also had seven winning seasons,
plus one 6-6 season and one 6-6 record in the regular season but
with a bowl loss, and 2011 is still undecided.
