Actually, the Lincoln campus is frequently referred to as UNL, to distinguish
it from the three other campuses in the University of Nebraska system:
UNK - University of Nebraska at Kearney
UNO - University of Nebraska at Omaha
UNMC - University of Nebraska Medical Center
There's a lot of state politics involved, dating back to when the
University of Nebraska assumed administrative control of the University
of Omaha in the 60's, referred to by many Omahans at the time as
'West Dodge High'. Now UNL and UNO are constantly at odds with each
other for funding and program control. (Kearney was made part of
the University of Nebraska system in the 80's, as I recall, before
that it was Kearney State College.)
Had UNMC not been a separate administrative unit, I believe UNL would
have still met the requirements to remain a member of AAU. (Also,
AAU does not count 'ag' research for eligibility purposes, and UNL, as
a Land Grant Institution, has a very large and well-respected agricultural
research program.)
