[NU Sports] Tressel out

I think that the timing of the announcement was primarily motivated by
the planned release of the SI article.
The SI folks have been through this a couple of times already. They
gave the university a draft of the article a week ago. That gave the
University a chance to take some action ahead of the publication date.
That in turn virtually guaranteed tremendous interest in the SI article
that prompted whatever action the University took. SI's plan appeared to
work quite well for them.
I agree with others on the coaching discussion. None of the big names
including Pelini are going to consider this job until the NCAA weighs
in. That isn't going to be until sometime this fall.
My bet is that it is going to be similar to USC. They will find that
there was a lack of institutional control, take away some scholarships,
ban OSU from post season play, and allow players to transfer without
penalty to other programs. Pryor is likely gone with a season
suspension and will enter the draft next year. He probably won't be the
only one. Tressel is the interesting question. They could elect to
make an example of him and effectively end his coaching career with
stiff sanctions for any college that hired him.
Should be a wide open BT. If NU were ever going to make a run at a BT
championship in this new league format. This is the year. Also it
would be sweet revenge for Hoke to start his UoM coaching career with a
win over OSU.
Finally, at the bottom of all of this I'm gobsmacked by Tressel's
hypocrisy. I still can't figure it out. Either he is pathologically
cynical and it was all an act, or he is deeply delusional and somehow
able to separate his actions from this beliefs. I'm sure we are going
to read a fair number of conspiracy theories around Tressel being setup
to take the fall for a corrupt institution, and there could be some
truth to that too. This quote from the SI article, however, pretty much
summed it up for me.
"In the morning he would read the Bible with another coach. Then, in the
afternoon, he would go out and cheat kids who had probably saved up
money from mowing lawns to buy those raffle tickets. That's Jim
Tressel."

Here in Lincoln I'm told the UNL communications staff was called in
to work today (a holiday) to deal with handling this, as Nebraska
coach Bo Pelini is an OSU alum and might be on a lot of people's wish
lists to replace Tressel. (Also makes me wonder if OSU had planned to
announce this on Tuesday and it leaked.)
OSU has already announced that they won't hire a new coach right away,
though I suspect few people would take that job until there's a better
idea of what kind of bombshell the NCAA will be dropping. OSU meets
with the NCAA in August, but a decision on sanctions isn't likely until
some time in the fall.
