[NU Sports] Pay to Play

While I'm in the "no" column I understand the issues. When I was at NU in the mid to late 70's the issue was debated in the Daily. The general consensus seem to agree that no jobs should be allowed during the school year but that a summer job should be enough to earn "beer money". I suppose today with many of the lighter class loads being made up during the summer, it is now be a lot tougher. Still the thought of getting paid cash for playing college sports just rankles me. Sure you get the free ride but you have to play for that school, so you have no choice but to enroll there, so you in effect get your money back, and don't get paid. When an amateur golfer wins an open, I think he or she gets equipment

The military is not for everyone. No single job or employer is. And at still doesn't solve the problem of where they get the money while they are in school. I doubt you want the government to loan it to them with a promise of military service to repay. And if left to the private sector, there will be abuses, leading to more regulation and scrutiny by the NCAA.

I still say base it on the official "cost of attendance" figures that every school publishes. That's what everyone else's financial aid package is based on. If you're going to call it a "full ride" scholarship, then make it so.

Additionally, as an NROTC student we got a couple hundred bucks a months for miscellaneous expenses. I have no trouble with any scholarship student, athletic or otherwise receiving some money, as long as every school in each division pays the same.
