[NU Sports] Pay to Play

Look, I'm sure the reason that the SEC and Southwest Conference players don't get caught
selling stuff is that they get assisted in other ways.

In Dallas, it was always amazing how an African American kid with great football skills'
father would get a job that allowed him to live in Highland Park so he could star as a
running back. Those kids went on to get a great education, and full ride scholarship. Was
it fair to the town where they used to live? No, but it was how Highland Park played in so
many title games.

The SMU Pony express was born out of a couple of alums who were determined to finally have
a winner - they cost SMU football for many years (they're still not back) but they got
their big winner.

NU has the same kind of alums, people with lots of money who really want NU to succeed,
but they've been steered to giving to things that don't tear down our basic fabric of
trying to play by the rules, and living with the consequences. As I said, there was a
time in NU's history where athletes got off campus jobs that paid very, very well. When
the NCAA stopped the practice, NU did away with those jobs.

I personally see no problem with a $200 - $500 stipend for personal expenses, similar to
what the ROTC guys get in addition to their scholarships. During the one semester I got
that (at U of Rochester), it allowed me a lot a freedom to do things that as a pure
student, I never would have been able to afford. BTW, you get a W-2 for that monthly
stipend, it's actually Midshipman pay.

Every year, the American Legion Baseball committee in Delaware awards a kid a $500-700
scholarship. I can be spent on anything academic, but it frees up family money so the kid
can have a little leeway while at school. The notes we get from the kids and their parents
make all the work involved in running the program worthwhile.

I guess I'm now in the Yes column.

Harry,
The SEC would be the conference most likely to abuse the concept not
embrace....

PS. Alert to Cubs fans: Fitz is singing during Tuesday's 7th inning
stretch.
