[NU Sports] Pay to Play

Jeff,
I think you've hit the name on the head. I would be that this idea is a trial
balloon to see if the Big Ten and other major conferences intend to stay with
the NCAA. The Big Ten is very close to being self-sufficient and other big
conferences would likely follow.

I think it is very interesting that the BT took the first move.
If the BT is successful in figuring out how to implement and manage
this, it's going to give BT schools a recruiting advantage. Wonder if
the NCAA is going to try to claw back some stronger commitments on
graduation rates.
It also sets up an interesting dynamic if the NCAA drags their feet.
The big conferences could use this issue to threaten to break away from
the NCAA and implement the post season playoff system that has also been
a hot topic of discussion.
This is definitely another example of how the big conferences can widen
their competitive advantage over the smaller conferences.

My youngest son, who is attending a local university but living off the
campus, was given
a credit card with the total amount of his scholarship/loan award to
spend as he saw fit.
He can use the card to pay for tuition, school supplies, a new laptop,
virtually anything
you can use a basic credit card for as he finishes his education.
(including beer at the
bar)
Right now, I think athletes have an account with the book store, a meal
pass at the
cafeteria and essentially a free ride on fees and tuition. Kids on need
scholarships get
additional money to spend as they wish - athletic scholarships limit
everything to school
expenses period and the NCAA considers additional money a no-no.
That kind of thinking leads to the $100 handshake after the game, or a
$20 slipped into a
locker - sure times have changed, but the big time booster alums will
always find a way to
reward top football and basketball players.
What I think everyone is missing is that if you pay football and
basketball players
additional money, you have to pay every scholarship sport that "living
expense" or you
lose the concept of fairness in the athletic departments. Kids in the
non-revenue
producing sports usually get half, third and quarter scholarships. Do
you then prorate the
awards?
I'm sure that is what the NCAA and the big conferences are wrestling
with right now.

Not kidding--it's been reported in several sources that the B10 is
looking at the
possibility of additional stipends of some kind. For example:
