What I get from the CBS News story is that nobody really knows the suicide rate among
vets.

But the answer "why" is simple, you take the typical grunt (their term) who leaves the
military after 4 years and maybe 2 tours in the middle east, and they go out into the
world with a certain amount of PTSD, untrained to do anything but be a low wage security
guard or a clerk in a convenience store.

Many don't have the resources to go to school, or as they drift around, don't see how they
could do that for another 4 years.

Trust me, I came out of the Navy as a well trained cryptologist and analyst (and writer)
into a world where everyone working was 4 years younger than I was. I saw it in College -
I graduated from NU at 26 - and went out into a world where all the people making hiring
decisions were my age or younger.

It can be depressing, especially when the people you are interviewing with for these entry
level jobs probably couldn't lead a squad, or run a watch section. Besides, those entry
level manufacturing jobs are now done by robots and the only thing they need are guys who
can fix those robots.

I fought through it, but many of these kids, especially the ones from smaller towns, drift
without hope and outside of their families, without support.

The American Legion, VFW and other old line Vet's groups' Posts provided a place for even
the Viet Nam guys to hang out, but those posts don't exist out in the country any more.
Hank Viscari, a double amputee in WW II, used to walk around the vets hospital amputee
ward in shorts to show that it could be done even in the 1940's. Maybe we need more vets
like him.

I don't have the full answer, but actions of this Alum, and others, will help get some of
the vets through it. We just need more people to step up and just do it!

Wonderful story.

To build some on Roy's reply, however, our kids returning from the current wars aren't
getting the care they need and as a result are committing suicide at an alarming rate. On
average 18 vets are committing suicide every day. It's not just the vets either.
According to advocacy groups, more active duty soldiers are killing themselves every day
than are being killed in combat.

These kids have been subject to multiple deployments which have stressed them and their
families. When they finally leave the military, they are often seriously traumatized.
They can't work. They can't maintain a relationship. They often can't even leave the
house. It currently takes on average eight months just to process a disability claim.
Start to get the picture?

"Now, at 31, he's set himself a new goal: He wants to be the go-to guy for difficult
patients - the patients everyone else is having trouble with."

Thanks to him, and guys like him, we have soldiers requalifying for the service even after
losing limbs. When I first saw amputees playing basketball or running, I was skeptical,
but the dreams of WW II guys like Hank Viscardi are finally coming true for just about
everyone who suffers an amputation and want to continue their life.

An amazing man from an amazing family.
