We got in free in my era - - late '70s/early '80s. 

 'Twas when the running line was that you'd call the ticket office and ask what time the game was going to start and the reply would be "what time can you get here?"

Students got in for free (on their student IDs) at both football and basketball games when I was at Northwestern, 1967-72.  I don't know when that changed.
