My bracket is in tatters too, so it was a lot of fun to root for Butler. They are a great story, great coach, and great team with a real blue collar work ethic.
Here's some stuff about the school.
They accept 72% of the students that apply but only 22% of those accepted actually enroll, which suggests that it might be a safety school for some Indiana kids. They don't have a stated minimum SAT or ACT score, but looking at the admission data they aren't accepting anyone under 400 on any of the three SAT tests and under 18 on the ACT's. They have a 55% graduation rate after four years. Total cost to attend is estimated at $39,786/yr.
By comparison, NU accepts 26% of its applicants and 32% of those accepted actually enroll. The minimum SAT scores are 500, and the minimum ACT is 24. We're graduating 86% after four years. Total cost to attend is estimated at $51,850/yr.
When you look at their roster, it's clear that Butler is building teams from good athletes who want to play close to home. They only have three players who come from more than a two hour drive from Indianapolis. One of those is the Freshman Marshall from Florida who gave the team a spark in the second half. The senior Vanzant is also from Florida. The other is Nored who is from Alabama.
In the profiles that I've seen, this is Brad Stevens dream job. He left a high paying job to coach basketball. The facilities are nothing special. The players don't have a high profile on campus. It's a very hoosiers kind of place and they like it that way. He was an assistant to Thad Matta and then Todd Lickliter who both left for positions in the Big Ten.
Butler is just a good example of what you can accomplish when you recruit strongly in your own state, and it happens to be a state where high school basketball is THE major sport.

Read article in NY Times today that Matt Howard has 3.37 at Butler, majoring, if memory serves, in Economics. He is one of 10 children from working-class family. A great kid, according to the article. I could see their Coach pacing sideline at Welsh-Ryan--in my dreams. No offense, Mr. Carmody, but Brad Stevens--who looks like a geeky "Tech weenie"--could be the man to lead us to the promised land. Only I don't think that's ever gonna happen.:-(
Yes, Alan. As usual, you have hit the nail on the proverbial head.
Gotta say that although my "bracket" is in tatters, I was a happy guy today with the wins by Butler and our local entry from the Big Least (as SJT loves to say). Now if VCU shocks the world, that would be sweet as well. Not a lot other than them to root for tomorrow, as Kentucky-North Carolina is essentially a battle between two ridiculously successful, arrogant programs. Calipari is always one step ahead of "the law" and Williams is not my cup of tea, either. And the Jayhawks are another "empire" with history.
It's gonna hurt Monday night not being able to go to MSG to root for the 'Cats.

News item: Butler advances to Final Four for second straight year.
News item: Northwestern, for 73rd consecutive season, fails to earn a
id to NCAA tournament.
Discuss.
Who wants to tell me, just to jump start the conversation, that Butler
s recruiting superior athletes?
Or that Butler student-athletes couldn't hack it academically at Northwestern?
