[NU Sports] Buckeyes in Hot Water with NCAA (Again)?

Was talking to a good friend who graduated from tOSU around 1970.  His diploma
says simply "Ohio State University".

He thinks that the "The" was added to the school name sometime in the mid-80s.
Not sure why, but it certainly gives outsiders something else to ridicule.

I'm adding the full list to this thread since we're talking about things that
partially
originated here....

I just remember that the AD while I was at NU (72-74)

1. Hired Tex Winter to coach baseketball
2. Put in the Tartan Turf field at Dyche.

In any case, when I was first doing Purple Reign for then Rivals, a few of our
posters
both here and on the chat rooms there started mocking The Ohio State University
by
abbreviating the name tOSU.

After a year or so, the NCAA started making a lot of noise about graduation
rates, and
published a rather damning document Football grad rate at about 40% and their
Baseketball
rate at under 20%.

I remember posting a commentary to the effect that until tOSU got those numbers
up above
50%, I would call them d (for duh) OSU instead. It caught on among a few readers
- I think
there are a couple of guys who still use it.

I was on the Bucknuts radio show talking about NU football one time, and my
appearance was
questioned by some readers, stating that I used dOSU in my commentaries. Now
that I'm not
writing much for sports, I've lost track of the grad rates at dOSU - are they
any better?

Yes, dOSU actually comes from some NU alums referring to them as tOSU in posts.

I changed the "t" to "d" when one of the NCAA reports on graduation came out
showing their
lack of graduation prowess. I used to get roundly boiled by the dOSU alums on
the chat
boards because I did that.

Oh well, old news now that St. Tressel is about to be skewered.

Funny.  When NFL players announce their ala mater they generally say The Ohio
State
Univesity. So figured it derived from that. My late dad (today would be his
94th b day)
was an OSU grad and while he rooted for them, he despised their emphasis on
sports at the
expense of academics

D stands for Duh - as in Duh Ohio State University, home of graduation rates
under 50%.

Can also stand for the Homeric (Simpson) Doh as in "Doh, OSU officials claimed
that they
didn't know the guy had flunked out prior to the season." Or, "doh OSU
basketball team
once again had a graduation rate under 50%." (which is what spurred the original
DuhOSU
back on Scout/Rivals)

It goes hand in hand with the Evil Empire for N**** D*** or MinnySoda, or many
of the
derisive names that I have used over the years when referring to opponents.

I think it goes back to when I was working at Oklahoma - when we were going to
"Shuffle
off the Buffaloes" one season against Colorado.

Remember that the original Purple Reign Chat Board had an official Grammar
Policeman,
empowered to correct grammatical and spelling errors!

It appears that St. Tressel may have known about the violations of NCAA Rules
involving
Pryor and his mates--and not told the University, as he was contractually bound
to do, as
per this ESPN online report:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=6194133

They are holding Press Conference at 7 p.m.  Stay tuned for "As The Buckeye
(Worm) Turns".
